Why You Need More Fish In the Diet

By Jennifer P. April
Harvard University recommends eating fish, poultry and beans as part of a healthy diet. Including more fish in the diet is a practice to benefit your heart and your mind.

The reason fish is so healthy is two-fold.

1) Fish is lean and low in fat. That automatically makes it a healthy bet.

2) Fish is a rich in omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids can protect your heart, lower your cholesterol and boost your memory power among other benefits.
In fact, the famed Mayo Clinic says these omega 3 fatty acids can lower your triglycerides, prevent blood clotting and reduce inflammation in your body. Each of these plays an important role in your health.

Let's look at them in turn.

What are Triglycerides?

Triglycerides are a type of lipid in your bloodstream, the calories your body doesn't convert into energy, turn into triglycerides and are stored in your fat cells. To many of these can lead to heart disease.

Studies show the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish lower your triglycerides.

Prevent Blood Clots

They also prevent dangerous blood clotting that can lead to strokes or heart attacks. They do this because they keep your blood flowing smoothly through your veins.

Both atherosclerosis (scar tissue in your veins) and diabetes can cause fatty build up in your veins. This build up can make it hard for your blood to flow smoothly. Omega 3's help because they keep your blood from "catching" on the fatty, plaque like edges and further narrowing your arteries leading to increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

What About Inflammation?

Doctors now believe inflammation lies at the root of all disease.

Consider this, inflammation is your bodies' immune system out of whack. Think about a time you suffered a minor cut, it burned and throbbed didn't it? Those are signs your white blood cells are rushing to the scene of the accident to repair the damage. They destroy the cells around the cut to reduce your risk of infection. That burning throbbing sensation? That's the inflammation.

The problem comes in when your body doesn't know when the healing is complete and continues to destroy healthy cells.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Reduce This Risk

You can get more fish in the diet by ensuring you eat fish 2 or more times a week or you could take a high quality fish oil supplement.

Doctors say the average adult needs a minimum of 1000 mg of fish oil a day to maintain their heart health. Find out how you can get the benefits of eating more fish without actually eating the fish.
